Social Networking for Stars: Foursquare
Out of the box most likely pretty apparent from my online presence, I am a large advocate of utilizing social networking to help your job. Facebook are pretty globally-used at this time... but would you use any extra platforms? I am likely to suggest one at this time: Foursquare. Foursquare, if you are unfamiliar with it, is really a social networking platform that enables customers to "check-in" for their current locations. Frequently you will find special discount rates at sells stores, or fun honours that may be won with the check-in process. Lots of people make use of this service because of its fundamental function: to allow others understand what they are as much as. This is often fun by itself... but not every one of us want the planet to understand our location 24/7. For individuals who don't wish to shout their whereabouts in the roofs, Foursquare also enables you to definitely look at locations independently, or having a small group of fans that may be controlled. How's this particularly useful being an actor? Well, around the most surface level, celebrate networking simpler. Considering an area just like a film screening or event allows people realize that you are positively active in the industry. This is particularly useful once the screening is perfect for a movie you are in, or perhaps is every other event that may help get the work available. You are able to attach notes for your Foursquare sign in for other people to see too---everything from your website's Hyperlink to a compliment towards the director of the film you saw and loved. I have also been the kind of person who loves to keep an eye on my recent auditions, to keep in mind what offices I am getting into for, callbacks, dates of auditions, etc. For a long time, I stored this type of information inside a handwritten notebook... effecive enough, although not really convienent and simple to let up on. I'm able to look at any casting office (independently) through Foursquare directly on my phone, within 10-seconds. This leaves us a permanent digital record of career occurrences will be able to make reference to whenever I have to. It is available in handy. Are you currently using Foursquare, or perhaps a similar program now?

Nikita's Maggie Q on Why Owen Is Cooking Breakfast and Hope for "Mikita" Fans
Devon Sawa, Maggie Q On Friday's midseason finale of Nikita (8/7c, The CW), Owen greets Nikita in the morning with a breakfast he cooked himself. The only problem with this cozy setup? Michael is supposed to be the man in Nikita's life, not Owen. "One of my story ideas I told the writers is when Owen comes back, I need him to do things that Michael never does for [Nikita]," Maggie Q told reporters during a lunch in West Hollywood on Thursday. "There's this lovely scene where she wakes up and she walks in, and Owen's made breakfast for her. And he's like, 'So, when I was detoxing I learned how to cook and it was really amazing.' She says, 'This is good. This is actually good. You can cook!' And Owen, in his innocent way, says, 'What does Michael make for you?'" VIDEO: Nikita's Shane West on trouble in "Mikita" paradise Sadly, Michael (Shane West) doesn't cook Nikita (Maggie Q) anything. Their relationship isn't really about that. "She doesn't have anything to say. She's kind of shell-shocked," said Q. "The reality is they don't make that time for each other ... Michael doesn't take her to dinner, Michael doesn't make a bath for her because it's all work all the time." Uh oh! This isn't looking good for "Mikita" fans, especially considering Nikita and Owen (Devon Sawa) seem to be on the same page about most things. "I think Owen's always been the guy who's asked her the right questions and thus allowed her to emote," said the actress. "Also, Owen has said in earlier episode ... that he also wants out [of this lifestyle], which is something that Nikita wants too. He said to Michael, 'You're crazy. You have her, and yet you're still on the run and doing this? Don't do it, dude. Leave.'" Ah, but in a way, Michael has already left -- not the lifestyle, but Nikita when he chose to stay with Cassandra (Helena Mattson) -- whom Q affectionately calls "Blondie Blondie" -- and the son he only recently learned that he fathered. He doesn't exactly have room to disapprove when he finds Nikita and Owen playing house together. "I don't think the problem is going to go away immediately. They're going to come back -- Blondie Blondie and little boy," said Q. "There's going to be some stuff that happens that's going to tie in Nikita's feelings about her own family and what happened to her. It's going to be nice and healing. Even if Michael returns though, he and Nikita will have to work on their relationship. "It takes a while for a woman to forget," Q said. "Nikita's still hoping it will work, but I think that because she's so afraid of losing him, she still hasn't dealt with her feelings of like, 'Well, you didn't come back with me. You stayed there.' I think that's one thing that hurts them a little. As a woman, it's like, 'I don't want you to choose me because [the other situation] can't work out. I want you to choose me because you want to.'" VIDEO: Nikita's Devon Sawa: Owen won't get in the way of "Mikita" There's still hope for "Mikita" fans though. According to Q, not only will we learn that "Cassandra is not as sweetness and light as you might think" (besides that whole being a spy thing of course), but Nikita will also uncover Owen's secret: he's working for Gogol. "She confronts him about that in the episode too, which is very funny because you get to see Nikita mad," said Q. "And not just like stoic mad, but like, 'WTF! Owen, dude, what are you doing? This is the organization that wants me dead and now you're being BFFs with Ari?'" In the end, despite what may fall out in the midseason finale, Q wants fans to sit tight. "I think the Michael and Nikita's love is everlasting," she said. Check out what else is in store for Alex (Lyndsy Fonseca) in Friday's episode, "Guardians," airing 8/7c on The CW): Do you think Michael and Nikita can work it out? Or do you think Owen deserves a chance?

Bérénice Bejo on the The Artist, Sequel Futility and the Joys of Peppy Miller
Even Bérénice Bejo acknowledges there’s not a lot left to say about The Artist, the heavily acclaimed silent-film throwback that has been on the awards (and thus the media) warpath since debuting at Cannes last May. But the Argentine-born, French-raised actress also knows full well what a good problem that is to have — even it means wondering how to follow up the role of a lifetime. Written and directed by Bejo’s partner Michel Hazanavicius, The Artist features the 35-year-old actress as Peppy Miller, an upstart, unflappable young dancer whose chance encounter with silent-film icon George Valentin (Jean Dujardin) catapults her to the frontier of talkie stardom. As Peppy’s meteoric rise intersects with George’s precipitous collapse, the starlet invests herself increasingly in both the creative and romantic heritage of his fallen legend. Anchored in Peppy’s optimistic vision and resisted by George’s institutionalized vanity, their relationship mirrors the enduring conflict at the heart of Hollywood and sets up one of the more stirring screen climaxes of this or any year. It’s not what you’d call a breakout role — not for an actress who’s been working in film and TV since 1993 (including opposite Heath Ledger in 2001’s A Knight’s Tale) — but it is undoubtedly a milestone among milestones. Movieline spoke with Bejo about The Artist, struggling with perception, and how to move on from Peppy Miller. Am I the millionth journalist you’ve talked to since Cannes? Let’s get some balloons and confetti in here, maybe. Yeah, I don’t know how many it’s been. I should start counting. You know, I’ve asked both Michel and Jean if there’s anything they haven’t been asked about The Artist that they wish they had. Now it’s your turn: Does anything come to mind? I think I’ve said everything. I don’t know what to say anymore. I mean, there have been so many questions. I remember, at the beginning of the promotion, that I would go on for 15 minutes about Peppy Miller. I’m still very much in love with her, and I like so much being her that I could go on and go on. It was very weird: It was like she’s sitting next to you, or she’s your grandmother. She’s so alive. And they thought maybe I was crazy or something, which I’m totally not. I’m not one of those actors who, when they stop the movie, are still in character. But I really enjoyed being her, so I can talk about it. It’s OK! What was it that you loved so much about being her? She’s so cool! She’s always having so much fun with everything that’s happening, and she’s not calculating anything. She’s just grabbing everything that comes around her and turning everything into a positive. She trusts herself; she’s faithful. She’s great! You just want to go into the screen and say, “You’re so cool!” And it’s me! I’m acting this character. I felt very, very lucky. Knowing Michel as you do, what kind of influence did you have, if any, on shaping that character in the script or development phase — before you went in front of the camera? I remember reading the first script and saying to Michel, “I think there’s too much of her in newspapers and magazines and everything, and I think there’s one thing missing: Showing her differently.” That’s when he brought in the interview scene; before that there was no interview. And I think the interview scene is very important, because that’s the moment where Peppy could go the wrong way. She could just become a famous actress and forget that the most important thing is just to be a very good actor. And she’s going on and on, and she’s so sure of herself. And then George arrives, and she know she’s being dumb and arrogant, and she goes back to what she is really. This scene shapes her more — she’s not perfect, she’s like everybody. She has ups and downs. Sometimes you’re too arrogant, and that’s life. Sometimes you have to go back to who you are. I love this scene; it’s great to see her trying so hard to be this very famous actress. That was my first scene. The first scene you shot? Yeah. That was my audition, I felt: I had to be really good in that scene, because the crew and everybody might think I’m just the director’s wife. But I have to show them that I am an actor. I really needed to do it right so I am not the wife anymore. I am the lead girl. Did you sense that perception following you during production? No, I think I put the pressure on me. But at the same time I thought, “Hey, Jean didn’t do an audition either, and he’s there. So why would I?” It’s always a weird situation where people might think, “Oh — that’s the director’s wife.” But it’s such an ambitious film. Michel has to have people around him whom he’s comfortable with. That’s the best-case scenario for everyone, isn’t it? Yeah! But again: Nobody made me feel like that. I just thought about that myself. And I wanted to be so good for him because it was such an amazing movie. So I put myself in the position where I had to prove to everybody, “I’m good.” But after that, I forgot. He was the director, and I was the actress. And everything went very well. Did you have one moment in particular as the actress where it really hit you how well things were going? No. No. But wait… I knew the movie was going to be a good movie. You could feel it on set. You could feel everybody working. You could see it in the dailies: Everything was so right. You could see it in the costumes, the hair, the design, the frames… everything looked so beautiful. So I thought, “We’re doing something very good and very unique.” Then I saw the movie like six months later, and I was like, “Wow.” My mouth was open; I couldn’t believe what I was looking at. And I thought, “If people are sitting in the theater, I’m sure they’re going to enjoy it. But how are we going to make them come? How are we going to make them curious?” Because there are so many movies, and this is black and white and silent. So it was very important to promote the movie, and to talk about it. But I couldn’t expect anything like this, no. Viewing the film is definitely an unusual experience for a viewer. But how fundamentally different is it to act in a silent film? It’s the same. For me., it was exactly the same approach. I just had to find the character and embody the character and just be her. The challenge was more for Michel — to find a way of telling the story without the help of the dialogue. I can’t say, “I’m feeling really bad.” He has to show an image that says, “I’m feeling really bad.” Like when the picture of George Valentin is on the floor, and it’s raining, and people walk on his face, OK: You know he’s going down and nobody cares any more. That’s an image, and that’s Michel’s challenge. When people are stepping on your face, then you know you’re not a movie star anymore. People don’t care. Going back to your earlier comment about how fun it is to play Peppy, plus the way this film ends, I’m just going to throw this out there: A sequel. I don’t think so. Peppy could have a whole series of films — serialized, just like in the ’20s. We should— Yeah, I don’t think so. We would be disappointed anyway. This is a big surprise, and a sequel would just be a sequel. So no, I don’t think so. So you wouldn’t even want to do one? I don’t think it would be a good idea, no. I think we have to keep it at that. Just throwing it out there! I would love to do a sequel just for me, you know? But I don’t think it would be a good idea for the audience. I think everybody would be disappointed. Can you still dance? Yeah! It’s so phenomenal. And you hadn’t danced before? No. I started dancing in February 2010, and we shot the movie in September 2010. I still have the tapes of my very first days. I said to the dance teacher, Fabien Ruiz, “I’m going to tape that, because I don’t believe that one day I’ll be able to do something else. I just don’t think I’m going to make it; it’s impossible.” And you stand, and he’s like, “Shuffle… shuffle…” It’s so slow. And then suddenly it goes, “Do-do, do-do, do-do, do-do…” And it’s unbelievable how hard work just pays off. But it was really hard. Was that the hardest part of making The Artist? Yeah, I think so. It was the most challenging moment and the hardest part. I took dance lessons. I learned the Charleston. It was the hardest part — just to have an idea of how to really feel my body. The interview scene, when I go down the stairs and sit down, I remember Michel saying, “Just move your hips.” And that’s when I thought of my teacher, who taught me how to walk. I don’t know how to explain it, but she really gave me a sense of how important it is to feel really good with your body. And I think when you’re famous, and you walk into a room and everybody looks at you, it’s because of the way you are. And she taught me that, so I tried it in the restaurant. When you’re really sure of yourself, everybody notices. I had to learn that. Movement. Confidence. Posture. Exactly. That’s the word I want to use, but I don’t know it in English — the posture, the gesture. For Peppy, it was very important. Like at the very beginning, [the assistant choreographer] said, “Walk the room!” What? “Walk the room! Feel good! Walk as a model!” I was like, huh? I didn’t understand where she was going to. And then when I was on set, I said, “Thank you, Elodie Hec!” Because my body was right, and that’s something you can’t do with the director, and it’s something that I knew I needed to do. I called the producer and said, “I know I need a dance teacher.” My arms, my head… everything needs to be tight. It’s not just about tap dancing. What is next for you? I’m shooting a movie in France right now; I’m a little jet lagged. It’s a comedy. But I don’t know. It’s really hard after you do a film like The Artist to read other scripts and to feel curious and excited about a project, because this one is so unique. But then you say, “OK: This is my job, and I have to be curious. I have to give other people a chance to do something different.” Just because something is not as special as The Artist doesn’t mean it’s not going to be good. But I’m enjoying it. I’m pretty happy. Since The Artist, in France I have so many propositions — more than ever. I can really choose the best things. So for me it’s just happiness. All of it. Follow S.T. VanAirsdale on Twitter. Mexico moves up digital switchover to 2015
MEXICO CITY -- Mexico is upgrading its terrestrial analog-to-digital switchover date, from 2021 to 2015, following a election Tuesday in Mexico's Top Court unsuccessful to derail the initiative. Leader Felipe Calderon first released the decree to maneuver the switchover date throughout his annual national address, similar to the U.S. Condition from the Union address, on Sept. 2, 2010, however the idea met a wall of political and legal obstacles. The leader along with other advocates are marketing the move in an effort to level the over-the-air playing area centered by Mexico's top two tv stations, Televisa and Azteca, who control 95% from the share of the market. The decree also mentioned that digital ripper tools boxes could be imported and offered in a "fair" cost to assist the switchover. The response was largely negative among congress. The Senate declared it unconstitutional, kicking the ruling as much as our prime court, stating that just the Federal Telecommunications Commission (Cofetel) might make this type of decision. However, there has been common accusations that Cofetel is heavily affected by Televisa and Azteca, who face real competition stemming from certain facets of the brand new technology, particularly digital multiplexing, that could greatly expand the amount of over-the-air channels. On Monday, our prime court categorized the decree being an executive rule that needs eight of 12 idol judges to election against it for that court to invalidate it. Only seven idol judges chosen against it on Tuesday. Contact the range newsroom at news@variety.com

The story sounds promising, however, the movie almost happened sans Stiller. (Seriously.) The actor admits that "at one time I walked away from it and they had somebody else rewrite it and they were going to do it without me, which was kind of ironic. Then it came back around." We can't imagine another 'Zoolander' without, well, Zoolander, so we're not sure how that would've worked out. Stiller also says that there are plans for a new 'Night at the Museum' sequel. What sort of Calligraphy Pen Rewrote Steve Jobs' Existence
I realize where Jobs' inspiration came from from, because I walked into same position three several days after he'd left in 1974: the calligraphy building at Reed College in Tigard, Or. "My first impression could be that the relaxation from the students really loved him," states Jobs' first calligraphy professor (and mine), Robert Palladino. "That surprised me, because there has been every one of these prodigies floating around, and Steve will be a dropout. Nonetheless they detected greatness nevertheless.Inchour editor indicates Apple Boss Jobs to think about Another Medical Leave of Absence'iGenius: How Jobs Changed the World' Airs Sunday on Discovery PHOTOS: Jobs' Dying: How a Magazines Covered Jobs will be a genius dropout with drive, so after his one 1972 semester just like a needing to pay student, he hung out at Reed for 18 several days more, studying calligraphy as single-mindedly just like a monk. Later, Jobs grew to become an associate of the Reed friend (and future Apple worker) to examine as being a monk inside the Himalayas, barefoot, with shaved mind and robes. But his first monastery was Reed's calligraphy room, run by Palladino, who'd been a Trappist monk for 18 years. PHOTOS: Apple Products in TV and flicks Plastic Valley's future most well-known screamer examined getting a monk who spent years taking a vow of silence. "Reed College in individuals days offered possibly the most effective calligraphy instruction within the u . s . states,Inch Jobs mentioned when he gave Stanford's 2005 graduation speech. "With the campus every poster, every label on every drawer, was fantastically hands calligraphed...I came across serif and sans serif typefaces, about different the amount of space between different letter combinations, in what makes great typography great. It absolutely was beautiful, historic, artistically subtle with techniques that science can't capture." Calligraphing as being a monk gave Jobs an esthetic sense most math-nerd tech leaders (like Bill Gates) lack. STORY: Private Jobs Memorial Searching for March. 16 "A Couple Of yrs later Steve came back to Reed to see me he was concentrating on personal computers from his parents' garage," states Palladino, now a outdated priest doing public in British and Latin in Or. "He preferred to speak to me about my Greek letters." As Jobs told Stanford's graduates, "Once we were creating the initial Apple computers computer, everything came back in my opinion. Which we designed everything into the Mac. It absolutely was the initial computer with beautiful typography. Essentially had never dropped in on that single course attending school, the Mac would haven't had multiple typefaces or proportionally spread fonts. As well as, since Home home windows just duplicated the Mac, it's likely that no pc may have them." STORY: Apple Shares Hit New High It wasn't merely a calligraphic skill Jobs acquired at Reed. It absolutely was a mindset. At orientation, freshmen informed, "You're here to appraise the mind in the person sitting alongside you, as well as the finest minds whatever person were living." Reed's dropout, suicide, and grad-school admissions rates were sky-high. Social capabilities and gradepoint earnings were low. At Stanford, any grade below a C was taken off students' records. At Reed, there's no gentleman's C, and you also were apt to be too pure to even request what your grades were. Your main goal was perfection. It absolutely was about questing individualism, original thinking, callous meritocracy. The school mascot would be a picture of burning ambition: a griffin blazing like the sun. "Steve stood a flamethrower mind," states Tim Girvin, a calligrapher who started around the Reed scene and ongoing to produce logos for 400 films, from Apocalypse Now for the Adventures of Tintin, as well as for Jobs, who requested him to use around the mouse-triggered computer -- a "M.A.C." "Steve mentioned, 'You have to come lower to Apple, I have something I've got tell you.' I used to be amazed being flown lower to use on experiments in type design with this particular technology still engrossed in secrecy. I showed up within the outdoors to get results for him just like a renegade, to think about in different ways about how exactly to beat that design. "A control button, the cursor device, was discovered in some form of pressboard with wire being launched the conclusion. 'Could you draw a logo design design for your Mac computer by hand using this cursor, using the pc itself?' he asked for. I couldn't. The screen was small, the pixels large. So rather, by hand, I made sketches for your logo design design along with the pc, all finished with a calligraphic brush tool." Jobs loved the finish result. Positive factor he loved it. "For anyone who is on his advantages, it absolutely was always, what is the next tier of perfection? What's the next factor you could do this this that could be better? So when you're round the bad side, then you definitely certainly were gone. Steve stood a real temper. There's yelling -- not tied with me at night. There's furniture kind of tossed around a place. He'd an authentic focus, a path he was on, and you also were either in route so on there otherwise you were not. People discuss being terrorized by Jobs, but it absolutely was because of that crazy passion and fire he'd. He was very passionate about doing new amazing things." "Ethically, Steve was as nice a guy when you could meet," states Palladino, who never saw Jobs within the chair-throwing days. "An authentic nice fellow." Palladino's attempts to make contact with Jobs after fame struck were rebuffed by Apple, whose office responded getting a silence stonier than any Trappist's. Since Jobs' dying, Palladino is becoming calls from so far as China, asking for experience into where Jobs' talent came from from. Asked for which stars should play Jobs and themselves inside the potential The brand new the new sony movie adaptation of Walter Isaacson's Jobs bio (launched March. 24), Palladino states, "I don't see many movies. I never saw a TV until I obtained in the cloister." Jobs hired Girvin to accomplish more designs many occasions over time. "When he started NeXT [laptop computer company Jobs launched in 1985], he mentioned, 'Can you brew up some form of visual expression depending on how we tell the story of NeXT?' He mentioned that brand am corporate and disciplined, he needed to adding magical significant energy compared to that.In . To Jobs, calligraphy was the miracle that enlivens science. "Nearly all my correspondence with him was handwritten. That was part of our connection, the return to the hands." Girvin states the ultimate time they were in contact, 7 or 8 in the past, Jobs will be a changed guy. "He increased to become much more calm. In the beginning, he am youthful, so passionate, so crazy, and therefore direct, it absolutely was another kind of energy. In my opinion he just increased being more peaceful within the character." "Your entire day of Steve's dying, I needed my iPad and started drawing sketches in regards to the Mac, beginning wherever I used to be with Steve thirty years ago," states Girvin. This time around around, he didn't need a calligraphy pen -- as well as the iPad is actually under the Pelikan pen that Palladino uses. "The iPad gives you an opportunity to take pictures and notes and sketches and ideas, and converge these questions single space, very easily." Finally, Girvin is capable of doing what Jobs asked for him to accomplish sometime ago when (see drawing above). "It's returning for the initial computer dream," states Girvin. "You can't connect the dots searching forward," Jobs told the Stanford grads. "You'll be able to only connect them searching backwards. So you have to trust the dots will in some manner connect within your future. You have to depend upon something - your stomach, future, existence, karma, whatever. This process has not let me lower, and consists of designed a large difference throughout my existence." Related Subjects Jobs

Behind the Lights (Tralas luces)
A Festival Films (in Spain) release of a Tic Tac Producciones, Lagarto Cine, Ukbar Filmes production with the participation of TVG, RTP. (International sales: Tic Tac, A Coruna, Spain.) Produced by Fernanda del Nido, Hugo Castro Fau, Pandora da Cunha Telles. Directed, written by Sandra Sanchez.(Spanish, Galician dialogue)Life is a bumpy ride for the family portrayed in "Behind the Lights," Sandra Sanchez's affecting fly-on-the-wall study of a gypsy woman's struggles to keep things from falling apart. Having spent nine months traveling around fairgrounds with protagonist Lourdes, her family and their bumper cars, Sanchez has edited down 200 hours of footage into an item to be cherished. Striking just the right balance between detachment and intimacy, the docu does full justice to the extraordinary stories hidden inside these unusual lives. "Lights" looks set to shine at fests. Shot in Galicia in northern Spain, the docu began as a document of the disappearing way of life of itinerant owners of fairground attractions. Soon it became a character study of 34-year-old Lourdes, who, when not surrounded by demanding children, is surrounded by men more noted for brawn than brains. The film tracks their lives from fairground to fairground through the good months of summer and the bad months of winter. A complex mix of fragility and resilience, Lourdes was married at 17 to Jose and became a mother at 18. Jose has lost his driver's license, so it's up to Lourdes to motor their 40-ton truck from town to town, struggling to shift through the gears. Jose seems none too pleased to have a camera following him, perhaps because he knows his wife is nonchalantly revealing his failings to camera. The team of workers on the bumper cars includes Rui, who spends a lot of time on his cell phone fending off girls he's met in various towns; burly Felipe, who is filmed happily reading a comicbook of "Beauty and the Beast"; and, most affectingly, Arturo, a silent ghost of a man who joined the family after becoming friends with Jose, and whose terminal illness becomes one of the film's subjects. Lourdes' strongest emotional attachment appears to be with him. By the end, the docu has built up a fair head of emotional steam, largely due to Sanchez's warts-and-all access to the family's private life, which takes "Behind the Lights" far beyond a mere study of the secret life of gypsies. Indeed, during shooting, Sanchez seems to have become practically part of the family, or a protecting eyewitness. "Life should be lived twice," reflects Lourdes. "The second time to avoid mistakes." World-weary and disillusioned, occasionally exploding into rage, she is given plenty of time to express herself here in voiceover musings, enjoying a presumably rare chance to talk to a sympathetic listener. At one point, she says she doesn't feel like a good mother; at another, she says she doesn't care if her kids don't attend school, since by 16 they know everything anyway. But Sanchez makes it pretty clear that being a good mother is tough under such demanding circumstances. Visually, the pic takes its cues from the work of another Spanish femme helmer, Mercedes Alvarez, featuring lengthy, static shots that seem to be the result of Sanchez letting the camera roll and hoping something interesting will happen, which it often does. Strikingly composed images of the fairground at night, or of a child dancing in the rain, combine with handheld footage of seemingly endless moments of crisis. Acho Estol's simple, guitar-based score is pretty and evocative, but overused.Camera (color), Sanchez; editors, Sanchez, Nahum C. From Up on Poppy Hill (Kokurikozaka kara)
A Studio Ghibli production. Produced by Toshio Suzuki. Executive producer, Koji Hoshino. Directed by Goro Miyazaki. Screenplay, Hayao Miyazaki, Keiko Niwa, based on the original graphic novel by Chizuru Takahashi, Tetsuro Sayama.Voices: Masami Nagasawa, Junichi Okada, Keiko Takeshita, Yuriko Ishida, Rumi Hiiragi, Jun Fubuki, Takashi Naito, Shunsuke Kazama, Nao Omori, Teruyuki Kagawa.Suggesting all that is lost when people rush to replace the old ways with shiny new alternatives, Studio Ghibli's gorgeously hand-drawn period romance "From Up on Poppy Hill" tells the story of how a young couple intervene in the demolition of a classic building on their school campus. Though relatively successful in its native Japan, this dramatic, somewhat grown-up entry reps a startling break from the fantastical tales for which the toon studio is known -- to the extent that the classically animated tale could have been told via live-action -- which should put a serious pinch on its export prospects. For director Goro Miyazaki, son of celebrated Studio Ghibli founder Hayao Miyazaki (who co-wrote the screenplay), "Poppy Hill" feels like an about-face after the disappointing debut of "Tales From Earthsea." Where that film lost its way along a sprawling, ambitious sci-fi plot, this one feels small enough to cup in one's hands. Adapted from a vintage manga series by Tetsuro Sayama and Chizuru Takahashi, pic reps a safe, sentimental choice as follow-ups go, trading on the fact that Japanese auds would appreciate a nostalgic, lovingly rendered glimpse of themselves circa 1963, just as the country was reinventing itself for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. A wide-eyed example of the postwar generation, Umi lives with her grandmother on a scenic hill above Yokohama, where she keeps the memory of her war-hero father alive by raising flags for the passing ships each morning. Unknown to her, a boy from Umi's school passes below daily and notices the signal, harboring a secret crush on his shy classmate. But dating is more complicated than the two teens imagine, especially after the boy, Shun, recognizes a photograph of Umi's father in her house -- it matches the only relic he has of his own dad, suggesting the budding sweethearts may in fact be related. When the details of Shun's family history come to light, they reveal the painful traces World War II left on ordinary citizens, a recurring motif in a tale whose central theme concerns the tension between Japan's past and future. At times, the pic's focus feels disappointingly simplistic, as Umi rallies her classmates to save an old French-style mansion the students use as a clubhouse. But the efforts of the young characters' Latin Quarter Anti-Demolition League represents something larger than the fate of the building itself, though the point may well be lost on foreign auds. Breathtaking in their own right, "Poppy Hill's" beautiful vistas and bustling cityscapes reflect the effects of modernization on Japan itself, especially during the students' trip into Tokyo to plead their case directly to the school board's chairman. Whereas Hayao Miyazaki looked upon the country's boat- and pollution-clogged harbors with grim reproach in "Ponyo," father and son alike see them as a symbol of national pride and progress in this context. And yet, "Poppy Hill" argues the need to maintain one's ties to the past, even for a nation shamed, demoralized and eager to erase its recent history. Certainly the young characters cannot move forward without untangling the specifics of their own family histories. The same principle applies to the country as a whole, and it seems somehow fitting that the increasingly antiquated medium of hard-drawn animation would serve to make the point here. The jury's still out on whether Goro Miyazaki can sustain his father's legacy as storyteller, though with its beautiful visuals and songs, "Poppy Hill" finds a deserving, if modest, place among its Studio Ghibli peers.Camera (color), Atsushi Okui; music, Satoshi Takebe; character designer, Katsuya Kondo; sound design, Koji Kasamatsu.
